St Petersburg

I went for a long weekend trip to St Petersburg at the end of November and these are just a few of the photos. Would love to put them all up but there's 250 so this is just a modest selection!

Saviour on the Blood church

It was built on the very spot Alexander II was assasinated. Its the most Russian looking church in St Petersburg and is very, very impressive.

Catherine's Palace

One of the summer residences of the Tsars. Hmm, Catherine outside her palace...if only it was mine!

Church of Our Lady of Kazan

A reasonably arty shot! This was the only one of the main churches we didn't visit!

St Isaac's Cathedral

It was commissioned by Alexander I who wanted a church to reflect the importance of St Peterburg as the capital of imperial Russia (the one that was on the site previously was a bit rubbish apparently!)

View from the top of St Isaac's

Looking out over the Neva river.

Winter Palace

The Winter Palace is now the main building of the Hermitage art museum. The granite column in the square is free standing, as in it isn't actually fixed to the base! Eeek!

Hmmm...would be better without the cars at the bottom, I might chop them off at some point.

Inside the Hermitage

One of the rooms in the Hermitage. I have to say, after a while all the gold everywhere really gets to you...
